Tragic News on Cargo Plane Crash: Death Toll Climbs to 13

The tally of lives lost from the freight aircraft which caught fire and plummeted has climbed to 13, per official statements.

City Leader's Statement

While en route to the Union’s candlelight gathering, I received word of a additional fatality that died as a result of the aircraft crash,” wrote the city mayor in a online message. “My thoughts is with the families, associates and co-workers of all who were lost in this recently occurred disaster. We will get through this as one.”

Casualties Confirmed

A release from the carrier listed the flight crew operating the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our thoughts go out to all employee who has been affected and all in our community community – assisting you and guaranteeing you get the support and assistance you need is our main concern,” the company’s message expressed.

Inquiry Details

Federal investigators announced that the jet’s port side wing burst into flames and an engine separated just after liftoff from the aviation hub, leading to the aircraft to crash and burst into a blaze.

The safety agency announced it is probing the plane’s maintenance history, that was in the state for maintenance several weeks prior to the crash.

Aircraft information indicated the jet was on the tarmac in San Antonio, Texas from early September to mid-October.

“We are aware that this plane was present in the facility,” stated an investigator on the following day, without providing a specific period. “We will examine each aspect of repairs that was done, from the San Antonio period, all the way to the day of the flight.”

Findings of Key Items

The cockpit voice recorder and data recorder were found, and the motor was located on the airfield.

The recorders – called black boxes – were built to endure collision damage and severe heat from fires, and they appeared to be undamaged when located amid the crash debris. Investigators plan on examining information from the black boxes.

Jet’s last recorded information displayed an height of 475 feet and a velocity of that speed ahead of the accident.

Repair Record

Per Federal Aviation Administration files dated 18 September, a crack on a structural piece in the fuel container demanded maintenance.

Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which said it supplies structural repairs for the company’s aircraft and operates a repair facility in Texas, declined to provide remarks, but said it would work closely when relevant authorities reached out it.

Activities Resume

In the meantime, the hub services restarted Wednesday night with its overnight or night sort operation, spokesperson Jim Mayer confirmed. The three runways at the aviation hub were also reopened.

The distribution hub in this location is the firm’s most significant. The center engages over 20,000 individuals in the area, processes numerous trips each day and sorts more than a huge volume of parcels per hour.

Local Response

A gathering was organized on the evening of that date by the regional worker’s group, which represents workers at the airfield, the company’s primary shipping facility.

Teamsters Local 89, which supports staff, commenced the gathering with a quiet tribute at 5.14pm, the approximate moment of the accident two days earlier.

“This tragedy was so sudden, so unexpected,” the mayor addressed the crowd of 200. “No one had a chance to bid farewell to each of those who we have said farewell to.”
