Israel Attacks Iran as Blasts Reported in the Capital

Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.

Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran

As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.

“The type of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, without initially offer further details.

Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments

The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key developments leading up to this attack involve:

  • US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
  • Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks scheduled.
  • Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
  • Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
