EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
